The Flyers appear to have avoided a worst-case scenario with Denver Barkey. The young forward left the team's preseason opener after a hit along the wall from Martin Fehervary late in the first period. He attempted to return in the second but couldn't last long before ultimately being ruled out.
Rick Tocchet provided a hopeful update on Barkey's status, shedding belief that the injury is not serious, which would be the best possible news.

"I don't want to put myself out here (saying it's not serious) and then he's out for four months. But it's not going to be for four months. It's just day to day."
Barkey's rise in the Flyers' system has been impressive to watch, and he's nearly established himself as an everyday player. Tocchet has experimented with Barkey at center, potentially adding more responsibility. And there hasn't been reason to believe he couldn't handle it.
Even with the expectation that Barkey won't miss significant time, this injury does open up the door for some of the Flyers' other young prospects. While taking his spot outright may not be the case, having more time to make an impression is important with the shortened camp and preseason.
Those players who could benefit the most from that are Cole Knuble and Jett Luchanko.
Knuble has made a strong impression throughout the summer. He stood out during the Rookie Series and has carried that into the preseason. He's shown effectiveness with the puck and a tenacity to make plays happen. It's allowed his stock to rise more quickly than many may have expected, very similar to how Barkey arrived with the Flyers.
He could've made the decision to turn pro a season ago. But going back to college for one more season and then playing a few games at the AHL level may have been the best thing for Knuble to do. He was able to mature, both mentally and physically. He also went through adversity, struggling with Notre Dame last season before finding his game again with the Phantoms.
As he enters his first full professional season, Knuble showing what he can do and earning more trust from the organization is important. Even if he is likely destined to start in the AHL, he has shown the Flyers that he could be a potential call-up option early in his career.
Luchanko is in the same boat as well. The Flyers finally have complete control over where he ends up, whether that be in the NHL or with the Phantoms in the AHL. And he has come to training camp healthier than he has in years after offseason surgery. The core issue that he faced certainly hindered his skating, which is one of his strongest assets.
His speed played a key part in the first win of the Rookie Series against the Rangers. He controlled the puck in the defensive zone and was able to weave around defenders in the neutral zone to set up the game-winning goal. Plays like that are vital for Luchanko right now, especially as he works to remind the Flyers of what he can bring to the lineup.
Luchanko could have the opportunity to show the Flyers that he can provide some of the same elements the team values in their centers. That is a position he has looked more comfortable in, and as the Flyers continue to evaluate their center depth, stronger performances could earn him another look.
Neither player is going to replace Barkey on a permanent basis. But with more time to make their cases, it's a good opportunity for both Knuble and Luchanko to earn more trust from the Flyers.
