The Philadelphia Flyers will enter the biggest game of their season on Wednesday night in Game 6 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Yes, it’s the biggest game of the season insofar as the opportunity to close out their first-round series in the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs. But there’s more riding on this game than just a ticket to the second round.
The Flyers had a 3-0 grip on the series. Since then, they’ve allowed the Penguins to claw back to a 3-2 deficit. And if the Pens were to win on Wednesday night, it would cap off a remarkable comeback.
It would also put the entire momentum on Pittsburgh’s side. A reeling Flyers’ club may not be able to hold the Penguins back. If anything, it could open the door for a miraculous comeback by Pittsburgh and an epic collapse by the Flyers.
That’s why the mission is simple in Game 6: Shut the door and win. The Penguins’ resilience has been admirable. Captain Sidney Crosby has been at the forefront of Pittsburgh’s resurgence in the series.
It was nice that Crosby and Malkin managed to avoid the sweep, and all. But the Flyers cannot afford to let this series lead slip away. A win at home will end any talk of a collapse and set up a date with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Flyers must avoid unforced errors in Game 6
The story of the Penguins’ two victories in this series has been unforced errors. In Game 4, Dan Vladar misplayed a puck that led to a needless goal by Rickard Rakell.
great work by Rakell, but Vladar needs to tend the goal...😬 pic.twitter.com/0ct3USQidG

The goal made the game 2-0 early in the second period. While the Flyers got it back, the Pens opened up a 3-1 lead in the third. Philly could not close out the comeback, and, well, Game 5 ensured.
A weird bounce on Vladar led to this goal, another tough one to swallow.
A WEIRD BOUNCE AND THE PENS RETAKE THE LEAD 😳

While you could argue that Vladar should have caught the puck, well, the awful bounce off Vladar’s backside painfully ended in the back of the net.
To make matters worse, that ugly tally turned out to be the game-winner.
Those are the unforced errors that the Flyers must avoid in Game 6. It’s not that the Penguins are somehow a superior club now. It’s just they’ve taken advantage of the breaks they’ve gotten.
That’s why the Flyers just need to play a solid defensive game, focusing on the fundamentals. If they can do that, the rest should take care of itself.
