Flyers throw lines in a blender ahead of tough matchup against Canadiens

Tyson Foerster's injury, plus a rather lackluster weekend, has forced Rick Tocchet to throw his lines into the proverbial blender.

After losing Tyson Foerster to injury, the Flyers were forced to make some changes in their lineup. The Flyers also dropped both games of their weekend set, including a rather lackluster effort against the Calgary Flames.

Rick Tocchet did switch up his lines in the third period of that game, and Travis Konecny was able to break through on the scoresheet. There must have been something Tocchet liked about those lines, because he's keeping them intact as the Flyers head to Montreal to take on the Canadiens.

There is a lot to unpack with this new group of forwards. With Foerster's injury forcing a change to that line, Tocchet has decided to break it up completely. But it still has the chance to be a hard-working, checking line with Nikitia Grebenkin, who has primarily been playing fourth-line minutes. Konecny isn't afraid to mix it up, but needs to find a way to step up his game. He could get a chance as the primary play-driver of this line.

Michkov and Couturier have played together often, but adding Brink to that line could be a nice touch. Brink has been one of the Flyers' best players to start the season. He has more confidence in his game and is more willing to go into the dirty areas of the ice. Couturier's two-way game and Michkov's offensive skill could work well with Brink's ability to get them the puck.

Dvorak and Zegras have been paired together before, with the two sharing center duties at times. Zegras has had an excellent start to his Flyers' career, posting points in eight straight home games. He leads the team in assists (9) and points (13). His four goals are tied for second. Tippett is the team leader in goals, though he only has one assist on the season. Adding him to that line could help get the rest of his offensive game going.

There's not much to make about the fourth line. Gaucher was called up when Couturier was injured and has remained with the injury to Foerster. In his two games, he held his own on the ice and is coming out on top in possession play. Abols, now with Luchanko demoted, and Hathaway are the mainstays on the fourth line.

Montreal has scored the second-most goals per game (3.67) in the league. They give up an average of 3.00 per game, putting them 15th. They are on a roll, winning three straight, five of their last six, and nine overall on the season. Meanwhile, the Flyers have given up the fifth-most goals (2.58) and are 27th in goals per game (2.58)

It won't be an easy test for the Flyers, but Tocchet and company will have to hope that these new lines can generate some much-needed offense.
