Jett Luchanko’s strong rookie-game showing could change his Flyers outlook

The Philadelphia Flyers have come under plenty of fire for selecting Jett Luchanko with their first-round pick in 2024.

When looking at some of the names taken right after Luchanko, it’s easy to see why the Flyers have gotten their share of flak. The Buffalo Sabres took Konsta Helenius immediately after. The Detroit Red Wings took Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, while the St. Louis Blues grabbed Adam Jiricek.

Heck, had the Flyers kept their pick, instead of trading down, they could have landed Zeev Buium.

That’s all in the realm of what-ifs. The Flyers took Luchanko and the heat that’s come with it. But after this past weekend’s rookie tournament, the entire outlook on Luchanko has changed. In particular, it was the 20-year-old’s assist on Alex Bump’s game-winner against the New York Rangers that really turned some heads.

Luchanko undressed the Rangers’ defenders and set up Bump for a sweet tally. That play may have just been what the Flyers have been hoping for. There are times when you can pinpoint the exact turning point for a player.

This might have been it for Luchanko. After the game, Lehigh Valley Phantoms coach John Snowden, who led the Flyers’ rookies in the game, praised Luchanko for his performance.

“Jett, as a centerman, is skating so good, he takes up space quickly. He’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he closes plays fast because he can get there,” Snowden said. “Once they got the puck in the O-zone, I just thought they moved it well. They held onto it, they didn’t force plays, they extended possessions.”

The comments, as quoted in The Athletic, highlight how Luchanko may have just saved his spot in the Flyers’ prospect pecking order.

And it could be massive as Philly needs Luchanko to deliver on the hype that came with his selection.

Luchanko looking to improve following offseason surgery

As Kevin Kurz noted in The Athletic, Luchanko had been dealing with a core muscle issue for about a year and a half. That situation likely hampered his play, eventually bringing his development into question.

But now that the surgery has seemingly taken care of the “little nagging thing”, Luchanko’s trajectory could be headed back towards a successful progression to the NHL.

If we look at Luchanko as a center, well, Philly certainly has a need for more depth. Christian Dvorak looks good at the top, with Trevor Zegras likely taking over the second-line center role. But beyond that, the Flyers could use more punch.

Yes, Porter Martone could deliver that in his first full season in the NHL. But he’s a winger. That’s why the Flyers need someone who can slide in and provide more high-end talent behind Dvorak and Zegras.

Conversely, if we view Luchanko as a winger, he might find it hard to displace anyone from the top nine. Hence, the Flyers need Luchanko to succeed down the middle. If he can do that, the club will greatly benefit from the added depth.

At this point, it’s likely that the former first-rounder starts the season in Lehigh Valley. But you have to think that if everything goes well, he’ll be among the first call-ups at some point this season.
