The Philadelphia Flyers may not have made it to the Stanley Cup Final this year, but they are heading in the right direction. The team made it into the playoffs in Rick Tocchet's first year as head coach and clinched their first playoff series win since 2020 after they defeated the rival Pittsburgh Penguins in six games. The Flyers look set to be a contender for the foreseeable future.

Before Tocchet's emergence, the Flyers were in the midst of their rebuilt with John Tortorella leading things behind the bench. But before the end of his third season, Tortorella was fired by the team.

As for Tortorella, he originally stepped away from coaching in the NHL, although he was an assistant coach for the United States' men's ice hockey team in this year' Winter Olympics. But in a shocking move, Tortorella was named head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights in their final eight games of the regular season. Now, he coached the team to the Stanley Cup Final.

John Tortorella has chance to win second Stanley Cup a year after end of Flyers tenure

The Tortorella tenure wasn't the most memorable for Flyers fans. Yes, they were in the midst of trying to boast a solid core of young talent through a rebuild. They were close to a playoff berth during the 2023-24 season, but other than that, the wins weren't arriving for Tortorella and the Flyers.

But his third season was a rough one, and it reached it's breaking point. As The Athletic's Michael Russo and Joe Smith remembered, Tortorella got into a heated argument with Flyers defenseman Cam York after the latter was benched by the former. Tortorella then spoke with reporters after the Flyers' loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and had some telling comments, saying he didn't know how to coach during the type of season where the team was stacking up losses.

“I’m not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we’re at right now,” Tortorella said. “But I have to do a better job.”

These comments, along with the losses, resulted in the Flyers firing him before the 2024-25 season even ended. A change was needed for both parties.

Now, as we look back on it, the move was beneficial for both sides. The Flyers were able to capitalize on Tocchet's contract running out with the Vancouver Canucks, and hiring him to be their new head coach. He was a former player for the franchise, with a penchant of getting the most out of his players. One year of evidence proves just that, as he took them back to the playoffs, and they made it to the second round.

As for Tortorella, he pivoted back into the media world by taking an analyst job with ESPN. But at the tail end of this season, the Golden Knights gave him a call to replace Bruce Cassidy as head coach. Tortorella accepted. The change in voice behind the bench seemingly helped out Vegas, as the team stepped up after the team struggled along with the rest of the Pacific Division. The team looked great in the first two rounds against the Utah Mammoth and Anaheim Ducks, but they shocked the world after they swept the Colorado Avalanche, who had the best record in all of hockey, in the Western Conference Finals.

Regardless of how the Stanley Cup Final ends, one has to wonder if Tortorella and the Golden Knights will want to extend their partnership before next season. Through just a short amount of time, it's evident that Tortorella's voice was a welcome one in Vegas.

As for the Flyers, they will try to ensure they can make it to the Eastern Conference Finals next season, at minimum. That will happen with Tocchet's development of their younger players and general manager Danny Briere bringing in some players that can help the Flyers take that next step forward.
