There is no question that Porter Martone is one of the most exciting young players in the NHL right now. And the Philadelphia Flyers are very lucky to have him.
His 10 points in nine games have made him an instant sensation.
And that’s precisely why Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet wants to pump the brakes on expectations for Martone.
Tocchet is right. It’s easy to forget that the sixth-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft is just 19 years old. That’s why Philly’s bench boss made it clear that Martone is no savior of any kind. He’s just a talented player who will hopefully contribute to the Flyers’ rising stock.
“I also want to make sure we temper the expectations. I know there’s a lot of buzz around town. I want him to understand that he’s not the savior. We want him to just be Porter Martone. He’s a great kid. We’ve got to make sure we cocoon him a little bit and not put too much pressure on him.”
Tocchet’s comments, as reported by Kevin Kurz in The Athletic, are the right approach the organization can take with such a talented prospect.
The last thing the Flyers want is to thrust the responsibility of becoming “the guy” at such a young age.
Flyers have to nurture Porter Martone
There is always the temptation to throw talented players into the fire. When a prospect is deemed “NHL-ready,” there’s an inclination to just throw him over the boards and get things rolling.
But time after time, teams have made the cardinal sin of putting too much pressure on prospects too soon.
Some have handled it, while others have not.
And that’s what the Flyers have to avoid. They can’t play Russian roulette with such a promising talent. If anything, pressure should increase as Porter Martone shows he can handle a much larger role.
It’s what the Toronto Maple Leafs have done with Gavin McKenna. There have been calls for McKenna, the first-overall pick from 2026, to get the spotlight. However, the Maple Leafs will be sheltering him early on.
The New York Islanders did the same thing with Matthew Schaefer last season, and it worked out very well for the team and the player.
Ultimately, Rick Tocchet is right. He is a wise coach and understands that putting way too much pressure on a 19-year-old could backfire. Taking a measured, tempered approach is the right path.
The Flyers will be better off for it. Long-term, Porter Martone, and Philadelphia will grow into the top tier together.
