The Philadelphia Flyers carried positive vibes entering Thursday night. Not only did they have the chance to move up the Wild Card standings with a win over the Detroit Red Wings and top forward Tyson Foerster returned from injury, but it was also top prospect Porter Martone's fist home game as a Flyer. Martone made his pro debut on Tuesday night in a 6-4 loss to the Washington Capitals, where he showed real promise.
For Martone, his home debut was eventful to say the least. While the Flyers lost 4-2 to the Red Wings, Martone did pick up his first NHL point, an assist to Travis Konecny. There was also the incident with one referee during the game.
After his home debut, Martone assessed his performance, saying that he felt he could have scored a couple of goals on his nine shots in the game. Martone also credited the chemistry he's building with linemates Konecny and Christian Dvorak.
"I just did the things that make me successful."

"I feel like I could have scored a couple," said Martone. "I think I'm building some really good chemistry with [Travis Konecny] and [Christian Dvorak]. One's going to find the back of the net soon enough."
Porter Martone felt he could have scored a couple of goals in home debut with Flyers
Martone has built up confidence since late in his pro debut against the Capitals on Tuesday night. That carried over into Thursday night, as his nine shots on goal were the most by any Flyer on the ice, with the second-most being Konecny with five.
It is only a matter of time until Martone records his first career goal. After all, he does have 14 shots on goal through his first two games. At some point, one of those shots is going to go past the opposing goaltender.
Martone said that his play from the Capitals convinced him that he had found his game and did his best to help bring the Flyers some wins. Even though he has two losses in his first two games, Martone said their game against the New York Islanders is a good opportunity for them.
"I think I kind of found my game and continued to keep on playing," said Martone. "I just did the things that make me successful. I was trying to come in here and just give a jolt to this group and help them try to win games. It's unfortunate we haven't got one yet but it's a big response for us tomorrow."
The Flyers are fighting for their playoff livelihood. They had a chance to continue to keep pace for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. instead, they are at 86 points through 75 games. They are behind the Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Ottawa Senators, who all have 88 points to their credit. The Senators sit in the last Wild Card spot as of Friday morning. If the Flyers are to defeat the Islanders, they could move to within one point of third place in the Metropolitan Division, as New York has 89 points through 76 games. It is a must-win game, especially if they want to increase their percentage chances of actually making the playoffs.
No one truly envisioned the Flyers being in the position to sneak into the playoffs before the Olympic break. With how close they are to a spot, they decided to not only bring Foerster back from injury, but also burned one of Martone's seasons on his entry level contract to give them a boost. The 2025 first-round pick is certainly doing just that. Maybe his first career goal will arrive when the Flyers need his help the most on Friday night against the Islanders.
