An old Flyers rival had a start that Martone would be happy to mirror

It is official. Porter Martone is a Philadelphia Flyer and is making his debut against the Washington Capitals.

The 2025-2026 season has already provided some thrilling moments, but the Flyers first round pick from the 2025 Draft making his debut might be the best one to date.

After Martone's Michigan State Spartans were eliminated from the NCAA tournament, it was a whirlwind of news and reports until the deal became official on Sunday. For the Flyers, it marks a highly anticipated new start in the middle of a resurgance that has them on the very edge of a playoff spot.

For Martone, it is out of the frying pan and into an absolutely blazing fire. With the Flyers on the precipice of accelerating their rebuild ahead of schedule, Martone will be feeling the heat. After all, he's stepping into a lineup that is currently humming, with a stunning 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, which has pushed them into wild-card and even divisional playoff contention.

Martone coming out of the gate and struggling isn't going to sit well with Flyers fans who are watching a team on fire that could push for the playoffs. However, there has been a recent example of a player who has come right out of college and flourished under the lights of a pressure-packed situation.

Back in the 2011-2012 season, a Rangers first round pick came out of Boston College for their playoff run, and he went on a tear. Through their 18-game march to a conference finals appearance, he scored five goals with two assists for seven points.

opened a lot of eyes during that playoff run. He also secured the record for the most playoff goals before playing a regular-season game. Now, Martone will get a chance to get his feet wet outside of the playoffs, but the Flyers are essentially in a do-or-die situation. Every loss could be the final nail in their season. If Martone could find a way to contribute, then he could be helping set the Flyers up for a playoff run.

Martone could do it too. He excelled as a freshman, with 50 points (25 goals and 25 assists) in 35 games. His body hasn't been through the rigors of a long NHL regular season, which will be an advantage. In addition to that, Martone has prototypical NHL size. At 6'3" and 210 pounds, he instantly becomes one of the Flyers' biggest forwards. Kreider did the same when he joined the Rangers for their playoff run.

One of the interesting wrinkles here is that Martone instantly burns a year on his ELC. Thanks to this, he's going to be an RFA at the exact same time as Denver Barkey and Alex Bump. This trio of players, along with Matvei Michkov, is hailed as being the future core, and we'll get to see them in meaningful games together. This is massively important for the Flyers, especially when decisions need to be made in a few seasons.
