Alexei Kolosov is reporting to Philadelphia
The Belarusian goaltender appears to have had a change of heart, though his demands may remain the same.
After months of speculation and confirmation of Alexei Kolosov's desire to remain in the KHL, things have taken a turn. The Belarusian goaltender is now on his way to join the Flyers for training camp.
Kevin Kurz, Elliotte Friedman, and Kevin Weekes first reported the news. The latter added that Kolosov was already en route to Philadelphia. Kolosov's agent later confirmed the news.
Alexei Kolosov is flying to Philadelphia, there are no disagreements between the player and the club. We have made a certain decision. I can say that Alexei will take part in the Flyers' training camp and games.
It's unclear what changed since Danny Briere confirmed that Kolosov would not be attending training camp. But it appears that all the issues are behind both parties and a solution, for now, has been made.
Alexei Kolosov has changed his mind on returning to North America
With Kolosov on his way to Philadelphia, there is a chance we will end up getting to hear his side of the story. By what Briere mentioned, Kolosov wanted to be guaranteed a spot in the NHL otherwise he preferred to remain in the KHL. That is not an uncommon thing for players in that league. The KHL tends to prefer that their players are in the NHL when they leave and not playing in the AHL.
So if Kolosov did indeed hold that belief, it's not surprising to hear. But what changed between then and now? Could it be that the Flyers announced the signing of Eetu Makiniemi? This news came within 24 hours of the signing. Could it be that Kolosov saw the poor performance from Cal Petersen and released the opportunity he had? If he didn't realize that before, then it would be clear now.
Whatever the reason is, the bad blood between the two sides is gone for now. But from what Friedman mentioned on Kolosov, it appears his demands may remain the same. For now, he will come to North America, take part in training camp, and appear in preseason games. What happens after that?
While the Flyers want Kolosov to give playing in NA a legitimate chance, it sounds like Kolosov is still interested in only being in the NHL. The possible solution in place is that he will give things a shot, but there will be something in place where he can return to the KHL if he doesn't stay with the Flyers.
It doesn't seem likely that the Flyers would be willing to keep three goaltenders on the roster, though. And even with the signing of Makiniemi, Kolosov should still get prime playing time in the AHL. The Phantoms would likely prioritize the two over Petersen. But again, is that something Kolosov is open to?
We'll find out in the coming days as the Flyers have five preseason games left on the schedule before the 2024-25 regular season begins
