Flyers Could Face Competition in the Goaltender Market
As we head out of the All-Star break and into the second half of the season, we are closing in on the NHL trade deadline. In a few weeks, some big names could be moved, and some contenders could be looking for depth pieces. It's unclear if the Flyers will be buyers or sellers. Some feel that Philly will be a bit of both, trading some pieces away while making moves to acquire some assets.
Many of these discussions are centered around the goaltending situation because of Carter Hart. This leaves the goaltending in Philly a little light, especially if the team wants to push for a playoff spot and go deeper in the postseason. Can Sam Ersson handle the load? Will Cal Petersen be able to be a reliable backup? Daniel Briere has a lot to think about right now.
If the answer to one or both of these is no, then the Flyers have some options. Some goalies could be available. Jake Allen of the Montreal Canadiens is an intriguing possibility. San Jose's Kaapo Kähkönen could also be a good addition to the team. Karel Vejmelka might also be had. It's possible that both Kähkönen and Vejmelka could be acquired for a draft pick (or two), and hopefully, the team could be convinced to take Petersen in return.
Either way, there are options out there. The problem is economics. No, I'm not talking about the salary cap, although that could play a factor in some of the moves they make. The issue here is supply and demand. There are not many goalies out there, especially cheap ones. Several teams may be looking to acquire a goalie. And if they want Petersen, they are welcome to him.
The Hockey News suggests a few teams that could be on the market for a goalie. Carolina has struggled in the net since Frederick Andersen went down with an injury. The Toronto Maple Leafs, everyone's favorite to go deep in the playoffs only to fall flat every year, could use some help. The Minnesota Wild could go all in and get another goaltender to attempt to reach the playoffs. They could also give up and sell off Marc-Andre Fleury if he waives his no-trade clause. The Devils are also weak in the net and could be looking to strengthen that position.
If the Flyers want to beef up between the pipes, they might have to fend off other rivals. That could drive the price up. Some of the goaltenders available will either be free agents this year or are grossly expensive beyond this year. Briere will have to tread lightly. While it might be fun to make a deep playoff push this year, it might not be worth it to snag a goaltender that will take away future assets.
