Flyers at Leafs, Game 55: Notes, Lineups, and How to Watch
After sweeping their four game home stand, the Flyers are off to Toronto to try for five in a row when they face the Leafs.
This is the first of three matchups between the Flyers and Leafs. After tonight, they will play twice in five games with both games in Philadelphia on Mar. 14 and 19. Toronto swept the three game series last year, outscoring the Flyers 15-7.
The Flyers have not beaten the Leafs since 2019, a stretch of six straight games.
Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers made a big announcement ahead of this game. Sean Couturier was named the franchise’s 20th captain on Wednesday night. Scott Laughton remains as an alternate, while Travis Konecny joins the leadership group. It’s a well deserved honor for each player, who has spent their entire career in Philadelphia.
This will be a homecoming game for quite a few players on the roster. Morgan Frost and Jamie Drysdale both from around the Toronto area. This will be the first time Drysdale will be playing in his hometown area with fans in the building. He is expected to have plenty of support in the arena. Owen Tippett and Scott Laughton also hail from the Ontario area, though not as close to the Toronto suburbs as the above two.
Even though it’s not a true hometown game for Laughton, this game may mean more to him. Trade rumors continue to circle his name. He has been the heart and soul of this team for a long time and holds a lot of weight in the locker room. While Konecny has been the hot one of late with seven points in five games, Laughton does have goals in back to back games. He’s unlikely to hit the 18 he had a season ago, but if he can get to the 10-goal mark this season, that should feel good for him.
Flyers Projected Lineup
Owen Tippett - Sean Couturier - Travis Konecny
Joel Farabee - Morgan Frost - Cam Atkinson
Garnet Hathaway - Ryan Poehling - Noah Cates
Olle Lycksell - Scott Laughton
Cam York - Travis Sanheim
Marc Staal - Jamie Drysdale
Nick Seeler - Sean Walker
Egor Zamula
Sam Ersson
Toronto Maple Leafs
It’s been a back and forth few games from the Leafs since returning from the break. They have traded wins and losses in their last four games, coming off a convincing 4-1 against the Blues. Bobby McMann scored the first hat trick of his career for a Leafs team that was severely shorthanded in that game. They were without Jonathan Tavares and Mitch Marner due to illness. And Morgan Reilly was out due to a five-game suspension.
The Leafs are led in goals by Auston Matthews who has almost double the amount than William Nylander. His 42 goals lead the entire NHL as well. It is Nylander who leads Toronto with 66 points. He missed practice yesterday due to an illness but he will be in the lineup.
It will be Ilya Samsonov tending the goal for the Leafs. It has been a rough season for him. He does have wins in back to back games and four in his last five. So he has been playing well as of late. The numbers don’t look kind, though, as Samsonov has a 3.26 GAA and a .880 SV% on the season.
Leafs Projected Lineup
Matthew Knies - Auston Matthews - Mitchell Marner
Tyler Bertuzzi - John Tavares - William Nylander
Bobby McMann - Max Domi - Nicholas Robertson
Pontus Holmberg - David Kampf - Noah Gregor
TJ Brodie - Timothy Liljegren
Simon Benoit - Jake McCabe
