The biggest name in the world of the Philadelphia Flyers right now is Matvei Michkov. He was the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft but there was a lot of intrigue around that selection for a few reasons.

For one, he has all of the talent in the world. Connor Bedard is better but it’s a debate after that. The teams that picked 2-6 all passed on him.

The reason that they passed on him was the fear surrounding his multi-year contract in the KHL. Many assumed it would keep him there for a few more years.

The Flyers felt that it was worth the risk and they took him. It proved to be a smart decision because he found a way out of his KHL contract in pursuit of playing in the NHL. The big risk that they took will pay off if he is as good as expected.

The Philadelphia Flyers love having Matvei Michkov in town already

Last week, Michkov arrived in North America. On Monday night, he got to see the Philly faithful in action. He paid a visit to the Philadelphia Phillies game as they took on the New York Yankees.

He learned quickly what the crowd could be like if the team didn’t play well as the Yankees beat the Phillies 14-4. They are in first place by a lot and have the best record in baseball so it was just one bad game but it was a sight to behold for someone like Michkov.

He is making his rounds now that he is in town but the real show will start when training camp begins. Seeing him skate in a preseason game will get people going along with his NHL debut in October.

It is good to see Philadelphia embrace their new hockey star. It has been a few years since they’ve had one of that magnitude. If he lives up to expectations, they have someone that they can build around for a long time.

Hopefully, he is happy with how things are going so far because getting acclimated off the ice will certainly make him more comfortable by the time he reaches the big training camp.
