It will be at least another year before the Flyers will get to see Matvei Michkov and Jett Luchanko teaming up. But they are getting a good look at what they could do together this weekend.
The two were paired up, with Luchanko at center and Michkov on the wing, during the first official day of rookie camp. The two are expected to be on a line when the Flyers' rookies head to Allentown to face the Rangers' rookies tomorrow night.
"We all have bosses so they told me they play together," Ian Laperriere joked when asked about the two. "So I won't take the blame or the credit for that."
And while it was only one day of camp, there was a lot to like from the pair. Michkov showed off his vision and competitiveness. Luchanko flashed the speed and showed off his quick hands. The two teamed up multiple times throughout the morning session.
"It was my first time being out there with him, and, obviously, he’s an unbelievable player,” Luchanko said after the session. “It’s really cool to share the ice with him, and I’m excited to hopefully do that as much as we can moving forward."
The feeling was mutual when Michkov was asked. But the surprise came when he answered in English, something he has been working on with a tutor since coming to Voorhees in July. He called Luchanko "a really good guy" before adding one important thing: “Tomorrow, we are ready.”
Michkov, Luchanko flashing chemistry early on in camp
While Michkov is a lock for the opening night roster, Luchanko is expected to return to Guelph for another season. He had played rather well during the Storm's preseason before coming to Voorhees for camp. Luchanko had three assists and fired off seven shots during the three games.
"He's impressive with his speed. He's got the right name because he flies out there. I'm excited to see him too. He's years away of turning pro, but these are the kids you hear about," Laperriere said. "When I see him in camp live, I can see what they saw in him last year. I'm excited to see him in a game tomorrow."
Could he get the nine-game tryout to start the season? That is how long a team has before burning the first year of an ELC. That is extremely unlikely to happen. But, it won't not be a shock to see Luchanko on the Flyers next season. After increasing his offensive output by 60 points, Luchanko should be poised for an even bigger season.
But for now, he'll have the chance to flash his skill alongside Michkov. Doing it against teammates is one thing. Doing it against opponents will be another. It's only going to be another group of rookies, but it will still be a good test for both players.
Even if Luchanko does not debut with the team until next year, creating chemistry with Michkov now is still important. If they are paired up again the following season, they will already know how the other works.
Right now, enjoy the show.
