The Philadelphia Flyers were both buyers and sellers at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. They wouldn’t commit to one side or the other but it is clear that worrying about the future took center stage for them.
Part of their dealings led to them taking on Ryan Johansen who ended up playing no games for them. It was apparently due to injury but now we know there is a lot more to it than that.
Johansen played in his last game with the Colorado Avalanche two days before he was traded to Philly. There wasn’t much made about him being hurt at the time of the trade.
On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that they are putting Johansen on waivers to buy him out. They claim that there is a material breach on the part of the player.
The Philadelphia Flyers have an issue going on with Ryan Johansen
Johansen’s agent released a statement on his behalf letting everyone know that they are filing a grievance against him being bought out by the Flyers.
They claim that Johansen has extensive surgery scheduled to help him with a severe injury. It is becoming a messy situation quickly and the season is quickly approaching.
Regardless of what happens here, don’t expect Johansen to ever suit up for the Flyers. It seems as if the bad blood is going to be around for a long time. This was something that had been looming since he was first acquired.
It has been a while since something has happened to the Flyers that they can be proud of. This saga with Johansen has them in the spotlight for the wrong reasons once again. It feels like a very bad season is on the horizon but they said that last year too.
Time will tell who is right and who is wrong in this situation. It is going to be interesting to find out.
