Veteran-heavy Flyers head to Montreal in second preseason tilt
The Flyers will send a more veteran group of players to face the Canadiens in the second preseason game.
After a rather convincing win against the Capitals on Sunday evening, the Flyers will be right back at it with a different group traveling to Montreal to take on the Canadiens.
With younger players participating in the game versus Washington, Philadelphia's lineup will feature more veterans and NHL-level players. Bobby Brink and Olle Lycksell are the only players who also played against the Capitals. Both scored in the game, with Brink potting two.
The Flyers will be live streaming the game on their website, which is only available to in market fans. Puck drop is 7:00 p.m.
Oliver Bonk makes preseason debut
Oliver Bonk will lace up the skates for the first time this preseason. He is expected to be paired up with Hunter McDonald as the two skated together during the morning skate. It's another good opportunity for Bonk to keep building off what he has done during camp.
The main test for Bonk will be seeing if he can keep up with the pace at the NHL level. He can talk the talk of an NHL player, but it's a matter of if he can play at that level as well. Never say never on him cracking the roster, but the expectation is that he will need at least another year in juniors before making the leap to a higher level.
There isn't much room on the backend either, so it would be better for him to get top minutes with London than potentially being in and out of the lineup with the Flyers. But this first game will be his opportunity to try and prove to the team that he is ready.
Eetu Makiniemi gets first chance to impress
Eetu Makiniemi has a huge opportunity in front of him. On a PTO for training camp, he should get an opportunity to earn a contract for himself. With Alexei Kolosov still holding out on returning to North America, there is potentially a spot alongside Cal Petersen in the AHL. The Phantoms did make some signings to address their goaltending, though. But Makiniemi is more than likely part of the main tandem if he sticks around
Makiniemi has decent numbers at the AHL level, posting a 3.14 GAA and a .900 SV% for the San Jose Barracuda last season. He held his own in two NHL games for the Sharks in 2022-23 as well, recording a 2.13 GAA and a .906 SV% in two games.
The Flyers have the contract space to bring him in as they sit at 43 out of 50 standard deals at the moment. There is even a chance that Makiniemi could get some NHL time if he is signed to a contract. Whether that be injuries or simply bad play, the opportunities are likely to be there. It's up to him to seize this moment.
