The Philadelphia Flyers have been in existence since 1967, so there have been plenty of memories and accomplishments that fans have witnessed. There was the back-to-back Stanley Cup title victories in 1974 and 1975. There have been so many countless legends that fans in the Philadelphia area got to watch play, like Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, and Eric Lindros. That also means there are plenty of records that have been broken over the years.
While the Flyers are still looking for that elusive third Stanley Cup title, they got awfully close in 2010. Flyers fans will have great memories of that miracle run as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. They knocked out the second-seed New Jersey Devils in the opening round. They overcame an 0-3 deficit to defeat the No. 6 seed Boston Bruins in seven games in the second round. The Flyers then clinched their first Eastern Conference championship since 1997 by defeating the Montreal Canadiens in five games.
Flyers fans may have a sour taste left in their mouths by the end result, which saw them lose in the Stanley Cup Final in six games to the Chicago Blackhawks. But during this run, forward Danny Briere made franchise history.
Danny Briere sets Flyers record for most points in a Stanley Cup playoff run
During the Flyers' 23 games in that playoff run, Briere scored 12 goals and recorded 18 points for a total of 30 points.
The previous Flyers record was 28, recorded by former winger Brian Propp during their playoff run in 1987. Propp scored 12 goals and recorded 16 assists in Philadelphia's 26-game playoff run, where they ultimately lost in seven games to the Edmonton Oilers, which featured Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Jari Kurri. Let's face it, it was always difficult to face the Oilers in the 1980's, but the Flyers overcame a 1-3 deficit to force a Game 7.
That franchise record for most points in a playoff run would last nearly 20 years until Briere came around.
Memorable performances during Danny Briere's 2010 Stanley Cup playoff run
The Flyers, who were already up 2-1 in their series against the Devils, had the chance to push them to the brink. Briere helped with that in Game 4, as he recorded one goal and two assists in the Flyers' 4-1 victory. Sure enough, the Flyers eliminated the Devils in Game 5, with Briere posting a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win.
In the second round, Briere recorded a point in every contest besides Game 3. Four of those games saw Briere put up a goal and an assist. That's how on fire Briere was during this playoff run.
When it comes to his best performance during this run, it's difficult not to name Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Blackhawks. In the first period, Briere assisted on two goals and scored one of his own in the first period alone to put the Flyers ahead 3-2. At the end of the second period, Briere assisted on Arron Asham's goal to tie the game at 5-5. Despite putting up four points, it wasn't enough to give the Flyers the win, as the Blackhawks picked up the 6-5 victory after a third period goal from Tomas Kopecky.
Briere also gave it his all in Game 6 of the Final, as he scored a 2-1 go-ahead goal in the second period. Briere also assisted on Scott Hartnell's overtime-forcing goal in the third period. Unfortunately for Flyers fans, they know how Game 6 ended — a Patrick Kane goal. Briere had three points in Game 6.
Briere gave it his all during Philadelphia's dream run to the Final. This run and his other playoff trips helped Briere earn the nickname of "Mr. Playoffs" during his time in Philadelphia.
