A game against the Rangers has never been easy for the Flyers. New York had won eight of the last 10 matchups between the two sides. The last win on home ice for the Flyers was back in 2021. Brian Elliot was the goaltender, while Nolan Patrick and Sam Morin scored.
Safe to say they were looking to bring a win to the home fans. And that's exactly what they did. Jumping on the Rangers early, the Flyers used the momentum to keep them from sustaining much pressure. Sure, they visiting team had their moments throughout the game. But Philadelphia has continued to do what they have done best over their recent games.
They are getting offense from much-needed players and their goaltending has performed admirably after losing their top goaltender to injury for the second time. It's a recipe for success after those were two areas that posed a concern at the start of the year.
The Flyers kicked things off early with a goal from Bobby Brink just 3:14 into the game. It was a very-needed goal for Brink, who broke a six-game scoring drought. It was Tyson Foerster's effort to help set up the play as he blocked a shot up high and forced the puck out of the zone. His tenaciousness to then recover the puck was just as strong.
Travis Konecny continued his red-hot month of November, scoring just over a minute after Brink's tally. It came in breakaway fashion as Sean Couturier was able to chip the puck up to spring Konecny loose.
The Rangers did climb to within one on a goal from Vincent Trocheck midway through the second period. Scott Laughton had lost his stick on the play, giving it to Travis Sanehim. It effectively left the Flyers in a man-down situation as Laughton went to get a new stick. Would he have been able to help even if he stayed on the ice? Tough to say.
Konecny iced the game late in the third period with an empty netter, his second of the night. He now has 29 points in 24 games, easily on pace to set a new-career high once more.
Ivan Fedotov shines once more
The Rangers fired 23 shots at Ivan Fedotov, but due to the Flyers constant offensive pressure, Fedotov didn't have to work too hard. He did make two very important saves at the end of the first period that could've changed the outcome of the game.
The Rangers only had four shots in the first period. It took them over 11 minutes to get their first shot and then nearly five and a half minutes later. But it was the second, a shot in close by Brett Berard, that was a key one for Fedotov. Had Berard scored there, it would've given the Rangers a much better feeling about where they were.
Fedotov also made a big save on Alex Lafreniere late in the first. The Flyers could be looking at an entirely different game if even one of those shots goes in. This was one of the best performances of the year for the Flyers' goaltender, registering a career-high .958 SV%. With Igor Shesterkin on the other side, it takes that kind of performance to even have a chance of a win.
Since his strong outing against Tampa, Fedotov has won four of his last six starts.
Konecny continues hot pace
It's no secret that Konecny is the backbone of this Flyers' offense. He has carried the team on his back this month, producing at a high level. Adding two more points on Friday afternoon, Konecny has 19 points in 13 November games. He has one more game this month to add to that total.
Konecny has a four-game point streak where he's registered six points. There are only two games this month where he has failed to capture a point. Five of his outings have been of the multi-point variety, while he's scored two goals in three of those games. Only Martin Necas has had a better month.
It's easy to see why the Flyers went all in on extending Konecny this past summer. He's on another All-Star pace and continues to get better. He showed that skill on his first goal. The forehand to backhand move allowed him to get past Jacob Trouba and tip the puck five-hole on Shesterkin.
He can become the sixth Flyers' player in the last 20 years to register 20 points in a month if he's able to capture at least two against the Blues, the Flyers next opponent.
