What the Flyers are getting in David Jiricek

The newest addition to the Flyers' blue line has struggled, but his ceiling is enticing.

In their first transaction on trade deadline day, the Philadelphia Flyers sent winger Bobby Brink to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for right-shot defenseman David Jiricek. The Flyers will be Jiricek's third team since being drafted sixth overall in 2022 by the Columbus Blue Jackets, who traded him to the Wild last year for Daemon Hunt and four draft picks, including a first-round selection. Now, he's bound for the AHL to join the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Jiricek's Professional Career to Date

The start of Jiricek's professional career has been a bumpy one. He played a few games for the Blue Jackets in the 2022-23 season, but spent most of his time with their AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. In those 55 games, Jiricek scored six goals, registered 32 assists, and had a total of 38 points. That's really good for a defenseman in their first year as a pro, and Jiricek looked on track to become the kind of top-pair defenseman you'd expect to draft sixth overall.

Then, in the 2023-24 season, things went awry. Jiricek bounced between the NHL and AHL, playing 43 games and 29 games in each league, respectively. By the beginning of the next season, Jiricek made it clear he wasn't pleased with the yo-yoing and was traded to the Wild. The Wild, clear Stanley Cup contenders, played Jiricek an average of 11:43 this season, and he scored zero points in 25 games.

They didn't have the time to waste developing a young defenseman on an already deep blue line. The acquisition of Quinn Hughes more or less sealed Jiricek's fate as nothing more than a young depth defenseman.

The Draft Profile

Heading into his draft, Jiricek was widely regarded as a premium prospect. Elite Prospects ranked him as the second-best prospect of 2022 behind Shane Wright. They described him as "a 6-foot-3, right-shot defenseman who can do just about everything at a low-end top-pairing
level through the height of his career," and said he had "shades of Moritz Seider." That's high praise and quite an impressive ceiling, considering the sort of franchise defenseman Seider's become with the Detroit Red Wings.

The major knock on Jiricek's game, however, was his skating. He suffered an injury in his draft year, and his skating has been slow to come around ever since. The Iowa Wild, Minnesota's AHL affiliate, is a weak team to boot, and Jiricek's other positive attributes failed to stand out. His stock has fallen considerably since being drafted.

Jiricek's Future with the Flyers

In his press conference after the deadline bell, Flyers GM Danny Briere compared Jiricek to another high-pedigree draft pick the Flyers traded for: Jamie Drysdale. Drysdale, the sixth overall pick in 2020, was, to put it bluntly, a mess when he arrived in Philadelphia. Since then, he's rebuilt his game and become an effective two-way defender. And lately, he's looked even better. All he's done since arriving in Philly is slowly and steadily improve. There's good reason to believe the Flyers can work similar magic with Jiricek.

This is, lowkey, a fantastic trade by the Flyers: they dealt from a position of strength (right wing) to get a reclamation project at a valuable position (right-shot defenseman). Jiricek's performance since being drafted has been a bit underwhelming considering his pedigree, but the tools are tantalizing, and the Flyers have shown they can take distressed assets on the backend (Rasmus Ristolainen, Jamie Drysdale) and turn them into impactful NHL players. It'll take time, but acquiring Jiricek could be a homerun deadline deal.
