Xavier Villeneuve is a defensive prospect the Flyers can't ignore

While many Flyers fans are hoping the team selects a game-changing center in the upcoming draft, some believe that might not be necessary right now. After all, we have yet to see what Jett Luchanko and Jack Nesbitt can deliver. Instead, the team should focus on defense.

After all, the team does need some help on the blue line. Travis Sanheim and Cam York are locked up long-term. Jamie Drysdale will likely join them. Nick Seeler has two years left on his contract, while Rasmus Ristolainen has one. After that, the team has a bunch of prospects (Oliver Bonk, Helge Grans, David Jiricek) and younger guys who have yet to truly prove themselves (Emil Andrae). A solid defender might not be a bad selection at #21.

With all of this, there is a defensive prospect the Flyers should look at. His name is Xavier Villeneuve. Currently, the NHL has him ranked as the 18th-best North American skater and the seventh-best defender in this year's draft.

Villeneuve's game is reminiscent of a former Flyers' defenseman

The 18-year-old defender hails from Quebec, where he has played for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the QMJHL. During the 2023–24 season with the Armada, Villeneuve appeared in 54 games, posting eight goals and 43 points to lead all rookie defenders in the league. He was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. The following season, he won the Emile Bouchard Trophy as the QMJHL's best defender. As of right now, he is committed to Boston University.

What is it about his game that makes him special? Well, Villeneuve is well regarded as a fast-moving, mobile, offensive-minded defender. Elite Prospects praised his ability for "tempo manipulation." He's shifty. He can burst into speed at the drop of a hat, lingering for a moment, which throws opponents off guard.

A player like that could be very helpful on the power play. It would be reminiscent of when Shayne Gostisbehere did the same when he was a Flyer. Heck, you can see him doing it now for the Hurricanes in the playoffs. It would be great to have someone with the speed and passing acuity to steal a puck, lull a defender into napping, burst into speed, and then drive into an offensive transition to create a scoring chance. It would be great to have someone who can quarterback the power play.

A few years ago, Bobby Clarke revealed he suggested the Flyers draft Cale Makar instead of Nolan Patrick, Ron Hextall's choice. This is a chance, nine years later, to right that wrong. Villeneuve has the offensive capabilities of Makar, but because he is smaller (5'11" and 165 lbs), he puts Makar's abilities on Hughes' frame.

If all works out well, that would make a Flyers defensive corps of three fast, offensive-minded defenders of York, Drysdale, and Villenueve. Add some more defensive-minded guys (like Seeler and Sanheim), and that's a fairly balanced group. Think of when Chris Therien balanced out Eric Desjardins. Villeneuve could easily fit the Flyers and what they need on the backend. If he somehow slips to the 21st pick, he'd be hard to pass up.
