Following a 5-1 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes do the Philadelphia Flyers need a shakeup?

The Philadelphia Flyers composed a 12 game winning streak starting at the end of November and lasting ‘til the 20th of December. Since that streak the Flyers have struggled to string wins together going 6-11.

Things were looking up for the Flyers after putting together a three game winning streak, beating both New York teams and Toronto heading into the All-Star Break. While The Flyers still hold onto a playoff wildcard spot, it is slipping. The Toronto Maple Leafs sit one point behind with three games in hand. The top three teams in the Metropolitan division have all but guaranteed themselves playoff spots.

The Flyers managed just 6 shots in the first 50 minutes Tuesday in Carolina. With 5 straight home games to start off February this is a great opportunity to prove just what type of team the Flyers are.

Head Coach Dave Hakstol will scratch young guns Travis Konency and Shayne Gotisbehere vs the Montreal Canadians Thursday night.

This is the third time this season for the Ghost and second time for Konecny.

Nick Schultz and Dale Weise draw into the lineup tonight.

The man at the helm, General Manger Ron Hextall, has stuck to the plan this far drafting and developing the prospects. The Flyers have made an organization commitment in gaining young controllable talent. The days of old are gone. Clearing cap space not making a major splash on the trade or free agent markets are at the forefront for this the club.

I wouldn’t expect a shakeup in the city of brotherly love in the near future. The Philadelphia Flyers need to find their consistency; the balance between the 12 game winning streaks and the lackluster performances we have seen recently.

The Flyers may however look into moving veteran Defenseman Mark Streit to a contender. The 39 year old carries a cap hit of 5,250,000 on an expiring deal, the Flyers can retain up to 50%.  Streit doesn’t fit in with the direction the club is moving toward.  Philadelphia is not expected to resign Streit following this season.

Ron Hextall has preached patience from day one. With a base in place and impressive prospect pool continuing to be developed. The Flyers are in good hands going forward it might not be flashy now but the Philadelphia Flyers are setting themselves up nicely for a bright future.
