It appears as if the Philadelphia Flyers will be heading outdoors once more.

The NHL is expected to have a two-part series to the 2024 Stadium Series at MetLife Stadium. The two games will feature the New York Islanders against the New York Rangers and the Flyers against the New Jersey Devils.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period and ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reported the news on Tuesday morning.

It would be the fifth time the Flyers take part in an outdoor game. History has not been kind to Philadelphia when they take it outdoors. They are 1-3-1 in such games.

Flyers to play in 2024 Stadium Series

This will be the first time that the Flyers and Devils will meet outdoors. So far, Philadelphia has played Boston (x2), the Rangers, and Penguins (x2) in their outdoor games.

Philadelphia first took things outside when they faced off against the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park for the 2010 Winter Classic. Danny Syvert scored his first career goal, but the Flyers fell 3-1 to the Bruins.

In their first hosting appearing, the Flyers took to Citizens Bank Park for the 2012 Winter Classic. Brayden Schenn would score his first career goal while Claude Giroux would add his own. Unfortunately, the Rangers scored three straight goals to take the 3-2 victory.

In the first of two Stadium Series matches against the Penguins, the Flyers first traveled to Heinz Field in 2017. Pittsburgh went out to 2-0 lead in a game in which they would never relinquish said lead, winning 4-2. Jakub Voracek and Shayne Gostisbehere would score for Philadelphia.

Two years later, the teams met once more, this time at Lincoln Financial Field. What certainly looked like it was going to be another Penguins victory turned into a thrilling overtime win. The Flyers stormed back from down 3-1 to take the 4-3 win on a Giroux overtime winner.

The most recent venture outdoors is one that Flyers’ fan would like to forget. Meeting with Boston once more, the two teams headed to Lake Tahoe in 2021. Philadelphia was down six key players due to COVID-19 protocols and it showed in the 7-3 dismantling by the Bruins.

This will be another tough match for the Flyers as the Devils went from one of the worst teams in the league to one of the best this past season. Finishing third in the league with 112 points, the Devils took a massive jump from the 63 points they posted during the 2021-22 season.

The Flyers, in their first season under John Tortorella, took a much smaller jump. They posted 61 points last season and 75 this past year. And the organization has committed to a rebuild moving forward. These are two teams that have been moving in different directions.

We should see exactly who these two teams are by February. But heading outdoors should provide an exciting atmosphere nonetheless.
