The Philadelphia Flyers have been busy. Have you heard what they’ve been up to? It seems that Danny Briere’s work since the start of NHL Free Agency has been discussed once or twice.
Of course, the Flyers have been the talk of the NHL since they sent a massive offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks center Leo Carlsson. The contract, which would pay him an average of $18 million per season over five years, is now in the hands of Ducks GM Pat Verbeek, who must decide whether to sign it or take the four first-round picks and let Carlsson head to the City of Brotherly Love.
While that has been happening, the Flyers tried and failed to book a reunion with Claude Giroux, signed Tyson Foerster to an eight-year extension, re-signed goaltender Dan Vladar, and added a few depth players to their lineup. However, there are some other players who have left the organization. As of this writing, the Flyers had to say goodbye to seven players through free agency. Here are a few you may not realize are gone.
1. Noah Juulsen
Signed with the Colorado Avalanche
Former first-round pick Noah Juulsen never quite lived up to the expectations, and he’s becoming somewhat of a journeyman in the NHL, but he was a good rotation player for the Philadelphia Flyers last season. Always ready to jump into the lineup, he played 52 games with the Flyers last season, putting up 10 points. The defenseman also got into five playoff games.
Juulsen signed a contract with the Colorado Avalanche for two years, where he joins his former World Juniors teammate Nic Roy. Despite multiple moves, the Avs are still pretty stacked on defense, so Juulsen is taking another depth role to continue his career.
2. Lane Pederson
Signed with the Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings went all in on some of the oldest free agents available, but they did make one more for someone who hasn’t celebrated their 30th birthday yet. 28-year-old Lane Pederson only played five games with the Flyers last season, spending most of his year with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League. He had 48 points in 63 games in the minors, scoring 23 goals in the process.
He has history in the NHL, playing 76 games for four franchises. This season, he’s expected to break 400 AHL games played. Pederson also got a two-year contract that pays him $875,000 at the NHL level.
3. Adam Ginning
Signed with the Vegas Golden Knights
Unlike the previous two players on this list, Adam Ginning is one the Flyers have been following throughout his career. They had high hopes for the 50th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, but that was eight years ago. He hasn’t established himself as a full-time NHL player, and he really hasn’t shown a ceiling that could get there.
The Flyers drafted him for his size, and Ron Hextall said as much at the time, but the skill never translated. He was always a stay-at-home defenseman looking to keep opposing players off the scoreboard. That needs to be done at an extreme level to stick around in the NHL. He signed with the Vegas Golden Knights, who made a flurry of moves this offseason. Ginning’s press release was actually combined with 10 other players.
