The paint has slowly dried on the Philadelphia Flyers' painful playoff elimination. Philly fought tooth and nail, gritting through injuries to reach the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Despite the valiant effort, clear needs emerged within the Flyers’ budding core.
One of those needs is another solid, experienced center who could command top-six minutes. In particular, this center has to be someone who can carry the load on both sides of the puck and be a defensively responsible adult.
That center could be the New York Rangers’ veteran Vincent Trocheck. The idea of Trocheck heading to Philly has caught some steam over the last few days. Online chatter has questioned the possibility of the Rangers and Flyers teaming up in a bit of a rare intra-divisional swap.
But should such a trade happen, it could be a solid solution for both sides.
While there is no question that Trocheck would be a great addition to the Flyers’ lineup, the big question is who would go the other way.
Two possibilities emerge. One, a nuclear option, is sending Matvei Michkov. The discussion surrounding Michkov’s apparent inability to fit into the Flyers’ lineup has prompted trade talk. The flip side to the argument has centered on Michkov being too young to give up. And if that’s a valid reason, another player that could entice the Rangers is Trevor Zegras.
Zegras had a good year in Philly, but wasn’t quite the game-breaker the Flyers hoped he would be. He’s an RFA this summer and could ask for a raise over his current $5.75 million cap hit. If such an ask proves to be too rich for the Flyers’ blood, wouldn’t it make sense for the Flyers to explore moving him? Wouldn’t the deal make even more sense if it involved bringing in someone like Trocheck?
For the Rangers, adding either Michkov or Zegras would fit in well with their rebuild. They need young players to build around. Zegras fits that bill. Of course, the Blueshirts will want the Flyers to throw in a couple of other pieces. That posture could sink this entire discussion. But it’s hard to fathom the Rangers getting a better deal elsewhere.
Rangers and Flyers trending in different directions
Overall, the Rangers and Flyers are two teams trending in different directions. It’s unlikely the Rangers will be playoff contenders next season. The Flyers, for their part, should be in the playoff conversation all season.
That’s why Trocheck makes sense for the Flyers at this point. Rolling with Trocheck and Christian Dvorak in the top six wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. You could argue that Philly needs a solid 3C, but that’s a topic for another day.
The Rangers, with their unique rebuilding situation, can’t really afford to take things to the studs. Hence, a player like Zegras makes sense. GM Chris Drury can sell the idea that Zegras could replace Trocheck as part of a younger top six.
Be that as it may, the two clubs are heading in opposite directions. The Flyers are quietly sliding into “win-now” mode. That means cashing some chips in to build a winning lineup. As it stands, it’s not hard to envision a couple of solid pieces pushing the Flyers to the top of the Metro Division. They may not rival the Carolina Hurricanes just yet. But it’s not unreasonable that adding a player like Trocheck could elevate the Flyers to another level.
