Even while the Flyers are in a heated battle for a playoff spot, that hasn't stopped Danny Briere from beginning to work on the future of this team. He has signed more than a few of the team's prospects, most recently Jack Berglund. In total, Briere has brought five of the team's prospects into the fold, all but Porter Martone starting with the Phantoms.

And there is word that Briere might have at least one more big swing left. The Flyers' top goaltending prospect is Yegor Zavragin, currently signed to SKA St. Petersburg for one more season. The assumption was that the 2027-28 season would be when Zavragin came to North America. However, a report by a well-known Russian hockey source has things possibly changing on that front.

The report doesn't mention anything about timing and isn't confirmed at this time. A follow-up reply noted that after speaking with multiple sources, the indication is that this could be happening. But until the Flyers have confirmed it, all of this is just speculation and shall be treated as such.

Yegor Zavragin could make an earlier than expected appearance in North America

Another piece of information the report doesn't indicate is whether Zavragin would join the Flyers next season. There is a scenario in which the Flyers could sign him to his entry-level deal and then loan him back to SKA for the final season of his contract. It would show good faith to his Russian team and may make it easier to bring him over once the contract is over.

The Flyers have done it before with another goaltending prospect, Aleksei Kolosov. So if the reports come to fruition, that is one possible avenue the team takes. The more exciting option is that Zavragin comes over and fights for a spot with the Flyers. It's not a guarantee that he could jump immediately into the NHL, but if the team wants to bring him over a season early, they are likely going to give him that chance. They need an upgrade behind Dan Vladar, that's for sure.

Zavragin has split time between the KHL and VHL with SKA's second-division team. He also appeared in one regular season and four postseason games with the MHL team. His best numbers were with SKA-VMF St. Petersburg of the VHL. In 18 games played, Zavragin posted a 1.44 goals against average and a .949 save percentage. He also had five shutouts. He was by far the team's best goaltender and more than proved he was ready for a full-time promotion

Things were harder in the KHL, though, as Zavragin had to fight for starts with both Artemi Pleshkov (32 games) and Sergei Ivanov (29 games), the latter being a highly touted prospect for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He played in 12 games, posting a 2.63 GAA and a .919 SV%. Zavragin did manage one shutout for the KHL squad as well. But it was clear that SKA wasn't looking to use him as their top goaltender.

He hasn't played for them since the end of December, when he gave up three goals on 17 shots in just over 30 minutes of relief. His last start was in November. Due to that alone, it's rather obvious that with only one season remaining, SKA may not be looking to further develop Zavragin. That again is just speculation, but the above gives the thought some strength. With that, it could be the push Zavragin and the Flyers need to bring him over earlier than anticipated.

None of this will be easy, however. Remember how hard it was to bring Ivan Fedotov over from the same organization? There were some other issues involved, but SKA put up a strong fight even after it was deemed that Fedotov's NHL contract was valid.

But there is some excitement on the horizon if the Flyers can make this happen and bring Zavragin over early. We'll have to follow this and see what happens next.
