Before the start of the 2025-26 season, the Philadelphia Flyers lost a legend. Former goaltender and two-time Stanley Cup champion Bernie Parent passed away at the age of 80. It was a tremendous loss for the organization. But during the season, the Flyer will honor Parent's legacy in a way that will hit fans right in the feels.

After the Flyers picked up their first win of the season against the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, the team chose their player of the game. Flyers captain Sean Couturier unveiled a retro goalie mask and revealed that in honor of Parent, the player of the game will receive it.

The first player to earn the honor was goalie Dan Vladar. Couturier said it was "only fitting" that the Flyers' goaltender received the mask first.

It truly is fitting that a goaltender receives the Parent Player of the Game mask. Vladar had a huge game against the Panthers, as he stopped 24-of-26 shot attempts. It certainly helped that Vladar had some support from his team, as they gave him five goals. Couturier had two of those goals, and also dished out two assists for a four point outing.

It is a cool way for the Flyers to reward the top performer of the game while also honoring a player who meant a lot to the franchise.

Parent joined the Flyers in 1967 for his first official stint with the team. After being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, he rejoined the Flyers in 1973 and became not only the team's surefire starting goaltender, but also one of the best in the sport.

In the 1973-74 season, Parent led the league with 47 wins, a 1.89 goals against average, a .932 save percentage, and 12 shutouts in 73 games. He won the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender that year, and won the Conn Smythe for playoff MVP after helping the Flyers win the Stanley Cup with 12 wins and a .933 save percentage. The following year, Parent led the league with 44 wins, 12 shoutouts, and a 2.04 goals against average for his second Vezina Trophy. In that year's playoffs, Parent won another Stanley Cup title and a Conn Smythe Award after recording a 1.89 goals against average and four shutouts.

In his 10 years in Philadelphia, Parent recorded a 231-141-102 record, a .917 save percentage, a 2.14 goals against average, and 50 shutouts in 486 games.

The Flyers will forever honor Parent, but this season they will do so after every win by rewarding a legendary hockey mask to the top player of the game.
