It is tempting right now to be Flyers' GM, Daniel Briere. You had, what appears to be, a hopefully successful draft. However, a lot of major trades happened in the week leading up to it. A lot of players that many Flyers fans had hoped would arrive in Philly and don the orange and black. Pavel Dorofeyev, Mason McTavish, Alex Tuch, and Brady Tkachuk were all moved elsewhere. The list goes on and on.
So, you would think that with a lot of the teams across the Eastern Conference beefing up, Daniel Briere would feel some pressure to improve the Flyers. Maybe he does. He could be considering what assets could bring in Zach Werenski, Dylan Larkin, or Darnell Nurse. After all, those players would look great in a Flyers uniform.
Likewise, there might be some top-tier free agents who could be lured to Philadelphia. Free agency starts this week. Is there a veteran who could come here and take the Flyers to that next level? Could an Alex Ovechkin, Michael Bunting, Nick Foligno, Anders Lee, Jason Robertson, Boone Jenner, etc, sign a big contract to play in Philly?
Before we go any further, let's pump the brakes just a bit. So far, Briere isn't the kind of GM who has shown he'll be rattled. He's going to approach this offseason like every other one. The difference is that for the first time in ages, the Flyers made the playoffs, have a good young squad, aren't in salary cap hell, and could finally attract some talent. But just because they can doesn't mean they should.
If you look at the Carolina Hurricanes, they look for who can best fit their team. It might not be the best player available. Who is the best player that they need that will fit what they've got going on? Even if the player is super talented, if they don't fit the clubhouse, the Canes won't consider them.
Signing someone and overpaying them because they can is also what got the Flyers into salary cap hell under the previous two GMs (Ron Hextall and Chuck Fletcher). It's better to build on what they have rather than panic, overpay, and ruin this team for the next few years again. A lot of what can make this team better is just playing another season together and getting more experience.
There are some good free agents out there, but many are way past their prime. Honestly, this is a poor free agent class overall. Next year's class might be better (Cale Makar, Nikita Kucherov, Nico Hischier, Quinn Hughes, etc.). Patience might be a virtue.
Likewise, trading draft picks, prospects, and/or young talent simply to do it might also be unwise. Some of these "disgruntled" players may bring clubhouse concerns that the Flyers don't need right now. I'd rather have a gruntled player.
The Flyers are in a tough division, and the Eastern Conference appears to be loaded. But just because you have a high-paid team doesn't mean you are going to be good (looking at you, Toronto!). Also, having a lot of young stars wanting to be paid at the same time could be a recipe for disaster (Buffalo, Columbus, Anaheim). The Flyers got a good thing going here. Let's not rock the boat too much.
