The Philadelphia Flyers are a team that have finally headed in the right direction after a few postseason-less seasons. The rebuild appears to be over, as the young roster they built helped the team clinch their first playoff berth since 2020 and advance to the second round. Even though they were swept by the Carolina Hurricanes, it was hard for fans not to be excited about the future.

Given the Flyers have a influx of young players on their roster and in their minor league system, it will only be a matter of time that they begin searching for star players on the open market, whether it's free agency or on the trade block. That will be the next huge step to turn the Flyers into Stanley Cup favorites.

During an interview with The Athletic's Kevin Kurz, team governor Dan Hilferty said that the team still has to work to do for Philadelphia to become a destination for star players.

Dan Hilferty knows Flyers have work to do to make Philadelphia a destination for star hockey players

“We think we’ve made the pudding pretty well, but the proof will be in the pudding,” said Hilferty. “I can just tell you at a very high level, the interaction between Jonesy and Danny and the agent community, at least from my point of view, (is) a lot more robust. At the same time, guys who maybe wouldn’t even be interested, might be interested in coming here — might.

“On the other hand, the free agency market, the restricted free agency market and the trade market, from what I hear from these guys, it’s much harder than it was. Teams want to lock guys up. The money continues to go up. It’s not as easy as it was to go in there and snatch a free agent. Ears are open, they’re continuing to talk, and we’re not getting as many ‘not interested’ (replies).”

Winning will usually help a team lure some of the top stars available, whether they are free agents or demanding trades. It happens in all sports. Consistent winning and playoff contention could help convince others to join them. But it does take other factors, such as the players under contract for the foreseeable future, to the chemistry and relationships on the team, the city, and the way the organization is run. Those can all play a role in a team deciding to committing to a contract.

For the Flyers, they look like a team ready to make some moves to really put them over the top The Metropolitan Division is pretty wide open when it comes to second and third place in the division, as the Carolina Hurricanes should be the favorites for the foreseeable future. But when it comes to this offseason, there doesn't appear to be a reasonable shot that they can land a star.

Dylan Larkin looks to be the biggest star on the move this offseason, as he requested a trade from the Detroit Red Wings. While he would fit what the Flyers are looking for, he submitted a three-team list of preferred trade destinations — Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, and Minnesota Wild. While general manager Steve Yzerman requested that Larkin's agent add more teams to his list of destinations, it's unknown if the Flyers would even be in the running. It goes to show that there was still work to do.

Besides Larkin, there's no star power left. The free agency class is weak this summer, as all of the superstars set to hit the open market like Connor McDavid, Kirill Kaprizov, and Jack Eichel, all re-signed with their current teams. So unless there is someone that shockingly demands a trade, there won't be a difference maker left for the Flyers to bring in this summer.

This could work in the Flyers' favor. Next free agency class in 2027 is set to be much better, featuring the likes of Cale Makar, Nikita Kucherov, and Quinn Hughes. Another strong year, possibly with the Flyers reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, could give them a better shot at being a destination for the stars.

But there's also the fact that since the roster is so young, the team may not want to give up on their young players. They have the likes of Porter Martone, Matvei Michkov, Denver Barkey, and Alex Bump, all of whom are expected to be focal points on the team. If there is one thing about their young core of players, it's that they've built up chemistry. The Flyers would have to decide if breaking that up would be worth it.

At the trade deadline, the Flyers reportedly were pursuing St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas, per Kurz. However, they balked at the Blues' asking price of Martone, Jack Nesbitt, and a first-round pick. That's an example of a tough decision. they'll have to make. Is a star player worth giving up not just draft capital, but some of their younger players on the roster?

Make no mistake about it, the Flyers are heading in the right direction. However, it will still take some time before they are able to be serious contenders for the top players in the game.
