Daniel Briere's best decision as general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers thus far has been the hiring of Rick Tocchet. After an era of Broad Street hockey that lost the identity of the past, bringing back one of the players who stole the hearts of Philadelphia fans in the late 80s reconnected the fanbase with the team. It set in motion a meteoric rise back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
There were some bumps in the road for Tocchet and the Flyers, but his ability to get the most out of some players whom people questioned whether he could is the main reason why Briere needs to lock him in for a long time. The coach overachieved with the roster he was given this season, and with a bunch of great prospects also on the way, Briere and the front office have to be confident that he is the right person to have in charge.
Porter Martone is going to be the perfect player to grow under Tocchet's watchful eye, and the coach developed a fondness for the player early in his NHL debut. The head coach has some other gritty players who fit his style perfectly, but it was his work with individuals like Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale that showed he isn't just a hard-nosed coach who needs a team of power forwards to succeed.
Rick Tocchet's connection to Philadelphia
The Flyers failed to make the playoffs in five consecutive seasons before Tocchet got them back in his first year in charge. Philadelphia wasn't just happy to be there; they eliminated their in-state rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the first round, further infatuating fans with their new head coach.
Xfinity Mobile Arena can be a special place when their hockey team is succeeding, and it has been a long time since that passion returned. It wasn't all Tocchet's doing, but his presence early in the season brought fans back to a special time in Flyers history, and it set the wheels in motion for a great year. Even former Flyer Rod Brind'Amour took some time to acknowledge what Tocchet had done after eliminating his former Philadelphia teammate in the second round.
This confirms what I thought Brind’Amour was saying to Tocchet in the handshake line. Awesome stuff here from a former Flyer who knows what playoff hockey means to Philadelphia. #IgniteTheOrange pic.twitter.com/pncPP5r6Da

If the Flyers don't keep Tocchet around for a long time, there might be an uprising from the fans in Philadelphia. Front offices can't just make decisions based on fan opinion, but in this case, the organization's new head coach is the man to lead this young core forward into the future. With a few more tweaks from Briere, Tocchet could make a run at the Stanley Cup that eluded him during his time on Broad Street as a player.
