Four Flyers to play in 2025 IIHF World Championships

The World Championships will get underway on Friday and four Flyers will be taking part in the tournament.

Earlier this month, Team Canada announced that three Philadelphia Flyers would represent the team in the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships.

Tyson Foerster, Travis Konecny, and Travis Sanheim were among Team Canada's roster choices.

Today, the Flyers announced four players would represent their national teams in the tournament. In addition to the three Team Canada players, goaltender Samuel Ersson would play for Team Sweden.

Konecny represented Canada in the 2017 IIHF World Championships. He had eight assists in 10 games as Canada won the silver medal. Konecny and Sanheim played for Team Canada in the NHL 4 Nations Tournament in the 4 Nations Tournament. Konecny had no points in two games, while Sanheim had an assist in three games. It was Canada that took home the championship.

The 23-year-old Foerster played for Canada U20 in the 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey (WJC-20). He notched three goals and three assists in seven games. This is only the second time he will represent Canada.

Samuel Ersson played for Team Sweden in the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships, ending the tournament with a 3-1-0 record, 1.44 GAA, and .922 SV%. Additionally, he played for Sweden in the 2024 IIHF World Championships, also recording a 3-1-0 record with a 1.44 GAA and .891 SV%.

Sweden will open the tournament against Slovakia on May 9, while Canada will begin play on May 10 when they take on Slovenia.

Along with the host team, Canada will be one of eight total teams playing in Stockholm. Group play runs from May 9-20. The playoffs will begin on May 22, with each city hosting two quarterfinal matchups. The remaining playoff games will take place in Sweden with the semi-finals on May 24 and the medal games the following day.
