The Philadelphia Flyers should go after Jake Guentzel this summer
The Philadelphia Flyers should go after Jake Guentzel this summer. It is very important that they improve their roster.
The Philadelphia Flyers will be looking to improve their roster throughout the summer. They'd like to re-enter the playoff race next year and stay in it until the end this time around.
One player that might be able to help them with that is Jake Guentzel. Of course, Flyers fans know him well from his time as a Pittsburgh Penguin.
Guentzel was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes at the trade deadline but they were defeated by the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Now, Guentzel is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. He will be free to sign with any team in the league if the Hurricanes don't extend him before that.
The Philadelphia Flyers need to consider a player like Jake Guentzel
Now would he come to the Philadelphia Flyers? That remains to be seen but they should at least try. He is a high-octane offensive player who would fit in well with this group.
In his age-29 season, he had his third straight 30-goal season and 4th of his career (he's scored 40 twice). In that aforementioned age-29 season, he had 30 goals and 47 assists for 77 points in 67 games played with the Penguins and Hurricanes.
If a guy like Matvei Michkov came over, a guy like Guentzel would be great to have him with to open his career. Guentzel certainly knows how to play with stars as he's been teammates with guys like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Sebastian Aho, and Evgeny Kuznetsov.
There isn't a top-six role that Guentzel can't fill. It is just a matter of seeing the Flyers make a splash like this.
Penguins fans would be upset with the move because their boy would be signing with the cross-state rival. That might be a good thing for the Flyers though as there would be extra fuel.
Guentzel is going to have a lot of teams beg to pay him a lot of money for his services. This will be the largest contract of his career so he wants to be smart. The Flyers certainly aren't a horrific option for him to consider but money will play a big factor.
