The Pittsburgh Penguins have been vanquished. The Philadelphia Flyers are moving on to the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. But they shouldn't have been here. This is an anomaly. It wasn't long ago that they were given a 3.8% chance to make the playoffs. They rallied around each other and broke into the party. Then, experts felt that the more experienced Penguins would thrash the youthful Flyers. Again, they were wrong.

This team has defied the experts all year. Even at the beginning of the season, when they were playing well, everyone was writing them off, saying that the inevitable collapse would happen sooner or later. True, a midseason swoon nearly wrecked them, but this team has been playing their tails off all year. After all, they were still rebuilding, and they were "better teams" ahead of them.

As the season went on, the Flyers found inspiration amongst themselves. That's great. If you can rally around a "band of brothers" and lift each other, you are never truly out of any game. However, they can draw inspiration from another source.

Win the Cup for Bernie Parent

Just before the hockey season got underway, the Flyers lost one of the most important members of their alumni family: Bernie Parent. Parent was more than just a goalie. He was more than the man who helped guide Philadelphia to two Stanley Cup wins. He was a member of the Flyers faithful, a fan to the end. He enjoyed coming back to alumni events and spent as much time as he could in Philly. He was fully invested in this team and this city. It's part of the reason why his loss was so hard on us all.

As a tribute, the Flyers have offered up a remembrance of sorts for him. After each win, the team gives the game MVP a hockey helmet, the one Parent wore. They've also worn his #1 on their jerseys all season. And when the playoffs began, they added another tribute to the late goaltender. The shirt features the mask Parent wore with the word "believe" underneath. The sleeve also features the 3.8% chance they had to make the playoffs.

This is something they can use as motivation. Parent loved this team, and the Flyers loved him back. He remains the only Flyers goaltender who has brought a Stanley Cup to Philadelphia and a parade to Broad Street.

There could be no more moving tribute than for this current iteration of the Flyers to continue winning and bring the Cup back home. Yes, the Flyers are doing it for themselves. However, let's do it for Bernie. Let's honor the greatest goalie in team history by winning it all for him.
